(2) The Next Step: Music. Social Media
August 7, 2019
Welcome back to the blog! Today, I will write on social media and how it effects adults and teens, and what music I've been listening to and more details about that. Here we go!!
Social Media:
Social media. Nowadays, it is so easy for everyone to use. From babies, to kids, to teens to adults. What happened to being present? When was the last time you went somewhere without asking for wifi?
Being present is, when you are somewhere occupying space (your body), your thoughts, what you feel and ideas that you share match the energy with those around you or are aligned with yourself when reflecting (your mind), smiling, laughing giving attention to people who are around you whether you're reminiscing, planning or talking about situations that are happening right here right now (your soul.) When on social media it's easy to feel connected but, at the same time less present and connected as hard as that may seem.
I am definitely guilty of this, and as a result I get discouraged when there is no wifi and not able to be "connected" with others. See what people are doing, rather than ask those around me, how they are, what is going on in their life, what they plan to do this week. I can recall times I would jokingly send texts to friends who were in the same room as me, just to get a reaction. Wifi is treated like gold or valuable currency which makes me question what my priorities are. Instead of using social media and being on my phone, I could be doing so many other things. Developing friendships going to Playland and the PNE. Progressing further in the Playstation 4 Spider-man video game. Trying to live my best life, offline honestly would not be the worst thing for me but, then again I tend to get too carried away sharing Instagram stories of Memes, videos or photos that are for my own amusement and just for the sake of sharing and getting reactions. Don't get me wrong, there are people who use social media for all the right reasons. Fighting for just causes. Sharing their thoughts, feelings and opinions on important issues that our world face. I don't know about you but, I would love to save all the turtles and stop using plastic straws and water bottles. Maybe I will stop, and with that it will encourage others to do the same creating a powerful stream of change that will impact the world. Growing up in Canada, I'd like to think that Canada is a land of opportunity, resources and allows people to dream and go get it. Social media has a lot of flaws but, there is good to that needs to be addressed and something that we could all think about, talk about and maybe even do something about.
Music:
Music. I listen to a wide variety of music but genre's that stick out to me the most include: hip hop. rap, r&b, pop and classical music. This week I've been mostly listening to Frank Ocean, ASAP Rocky, Drake, Daniel Caesar, Beyonce, Ella Mai, Jorja Smith, and Willow Smith. I love listening to music. For me, there are songs that make me stop, sit down and deeply reflect on a memory, a conversation or a dream that I had and that either makes me joyful, melancholy, or at peace. Here's an example. When I listen to Skyline to by Frank Ocean, I imagine myself in a green field lying down. Looking up in the sky, seeing the sun, moon and shooting stars pass by. As the song progresses, I move from the fields into space, on the moon. I look at the earth, and above it there's a movie playing. A movie of people laughing, crying having fun with their families and friends, celebrating birthdays and children going down roller coasters. And once the song ends, its like I've woken up from a dream and I'm ready to face the day.
I think that lyrics tell stories and allow the listener to paint pictures for themselves, or maybe a music video is a reflection to the artist and the directors vision of a song. The Lion King remake recently released in theatre. I feel bad I haven't seen it yet but, I did get the chance to listen to the Lion King: The Gift album. My mind was blown. Especially because, Beyonce was in it!! A song from the album that is one of my favourites is Brown Skin Girl. Upbeat, happy vibes touched my heart right away. Some of the lyrics that hit me hard us when Beyonce sings, "I think tonight she might braid her braids, Melanin too dark to throw her shade, She minds her business and wines her waist, Gold like 24k, okay." I think Beyonce is speaking to black girls, and black women and uplifting them with the hair they carry. The beauty of the braids that Black Queens carry as crowns. The next line is referring to how black Queens can be fearless, carry their strength and confidence with their friends, with their family and in their environment wherever they may be in the world. Also that they do not take BS from anyone. They are also keen on minding their business and mindful of what food they consume. Shoutout to all the Black Queens, all the Women and everyone that struggles!
Thank you! For reading the blog. You are amazing! I hope you can return for the next blog on Friday, so until then....
